'Is No Possible' is something you will hear time and again in Spain. It does not mean that it is not possible, but at that moment in time I choose not to do it for you, that it might be too much bother; or I distrust you as a foreigner so I am going to stop you doing it.
The Clarion cry of 'Is No Possible' can be found at your local bank, where you often have to pay your bills, and today you have turned up at the wrong time and day for paying bills. 'Sorry it is no possible, only bill paying Tuesday morning from 10 am to 11 am, thank you, next please.'
Why on earth you have to pay bills at a Spanish bank, not via a direct debit to whoever you owe the money? Well that comes from a time before democracy, when the Spanish police and institutions wanted to know your every move. Slowly banks and utility companies are moving to a more modern way of bill paying, but you are still probably going to encounter a 'Is No Possible' at the bank.
The service industry also suffers from 'Is No Possible' particularly if you want to return that iron that electrocuted your wife when she used it. 'I am sorry for your loss, but you have used the iron, so it is not possible to return it.' Then the person serving you will look through and beyond you and start to serve the next person in the queue - who will gently push you to one side.
We are very keen to hear some of your examples of 'It is no possible.' why not drop us a quick comment below.
